‘History in a cloth bag’ Saturday at Jefferson County Park

The Carnegie Historical Museum in Fairfield and Jefferson County Conservation are co-sponsoring a program at 2 p.m. Saturday called 'History in a cloth bag,” delivered by local historian Michael Zahs. The event will be at Shelter No. 1 at Jefferson County Park.

From the mid-1800s to the Depression, when recycling was a necessity, women turned 100-pound feed sacks and flour sacks into towels, underwear, quilts and clothing. When companies realized that farm wives had started shopping at the feed stores so they could pick out the best sack patterns, those companies started getting creative.

Zahs will show off his collection of items from a time unknown by many, and show how cloth bags changed history. Participants should consider bringing along their lawn chairs.
