History through women?s writings program set

National social studies teacher award winner Michael Zahs will present the program ?Early Iowa History Through the Writings of Women? at 10 a.m. Oct. 5 in the Fairfield Public Library meeting room.

Jefferson County Naturalist Therese Cummiskey said, ?Last fall, he held our attention with stories of ?Iowa History in a Cloth Bag.? This fall, Zahs uses letters, diary entries and other writings of early women to tell the story of life in 19th century Iowa.?

Jefferson County Conservation has received funding from Humanities Iowa, a private non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, to host the program.

A cultural resource for Iowans since 1971, Humanities Iowa offers many culture and historical programs and grants to Iowa?s communities.

Zahs, who grew up on a century farm near Haskins as part of a nine-generation Iowa family, is is steeped in historic Iowa.
