OTTUMWA ? The International Affairs Office at Indian Hills Community College invites area residents to take part in a unique cultural experience called the International Friendship Program. The effort allows local families the chance to make a difference in the lives of the college?s nearly 200 international students, who come from six of the world?s seven continents.
The program is a non-live-in social host family program, created for local families and the international students studying at the Indian Hills Ottumwa and Centerville campuses. It gives the families a taste of another culture while giving the students an opportunity to experience American life outside of their campus environment. Students and families are matched up based on their interests and values. Large families, couples and non-traditional families are all welcome to take part in the program that is in its third year at IHCC.
The students and their host families are encouraged to get together on average at least once a month. Activities could include meals, holiday celebrations, time together during college breaks, attending college and/or community events, or simply just visiting.
There have been many positive responses from those who have been involved in the program the past two years. To chat with a current host family, contact the International Affairs Office at Indian Hills and talk to Karla McCollum or Ashley Albertson. They have a brochure that can further explain the program.
Anyone with questions about the opportunity can check out the website www.indianhills.edu/internationalfriendshipprogram or email internationals@indianhills.edu. Host applications will be reviewed to determine a good fit with participating students.
A background check could be requested.
