House of Heroes is offering eligible veterans and retired safety personnel assistance with minor home repairs. Those eligible include veterans who own their own homes or who are buying a home they will live in, have an honorable discharge, and a copy of a DD Form 214. Applications are available at the banks in Washington, Kalona, Wellman, and Wayland, the Coffee Shop, Frontier Restaurant, or by calling Russ Parker at 319-863-1024 (home) or 319-863-3389. Participants must agree to live in the home for five years after completion of the repairs or reimburse House of Heroes on a pro-rated scale.
To the patriotic residents of Washington County: The services provided by the House of Heroes cannot survive without volunteers to perform the labor on the projects at this time. This list of projects is never-ending as long as we have veterans and safety personnel.
Also materials must be purchased for the projects; therefore, businesses and citizens are needed for monetary contributions to match a $10,000 grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation to keep a cash flow for future projects.
To volunteer, call Russ Parker. To make a contribution, call Russ or mail it to 1601 N. Fourth Ave., Washington, IA 52353.
Parker uses his home as a point of contact and office to save the expenses of having an office, phone and secretary in order to have more funds for the projects. Please send a check or a money order, but NO CASH.
