Iowa Wesleyan Volleyball had their first official games of the season on Wednesday, when they hosted Simpson College and Mount Mercy University in a triangular. The Tigers fell in both games, dropping a 4 p.m. showdown to Simpson, 25-20, 25-15, 25-23 and the nightcap against Mount Mercy, 25-18, 25-17, 25-17.
The Tigers played Simpson reasonably tight for the first two sets, but the third set was the best of the three. Wesleyan had the lead for a good portion of the third set, but a late Storm rally was enough to overtake the Tigers. Recent Mt. Pleasant graduate Hattie Liechty saw the floor in set two for Simpson.
Allegra Collette and Jordan Millerl each had seven kills for Iowa Wesleyan in the first game. Maggie Earnie had 13 assists and ten digs and Cierra Howard had 18 digs.
After the first loss, the Tigers had a break as Simpson played Mount Mercy. The Mount Mercy team was able to sweep the Storm, setting up a possibility for IW to play spoiler.
The Mustangs came out to play in the nightcap, gaining early leads on Iowa Wesleyan in each of the three sets, and never letting up. The Tigers were able to put together a couple of big runs, but never enough to overtake Mount Mercy?s lead.
Lexa Mahr led the Tigers in kills in game number two with six. Kara Gills and Kali Unruh had five and four respectively. Earney was once again the main setter, tallying 13 assists. Howard finished with 16 kills.
Iowa Wesleyan, who fell to 0-2 after the day was done, will be on the road in their next contest. The Tigers head to Pella on Sept. 9 to take on Central College.
