IWU volleyball team goes 0-2 in home triangular

It was a day full of action at Iowa Wesleyan?s Ruble Arena on Thursday. The Tiger volleyball team took part in a daylong triangular, where they fell 3-0 to Mt. Mercy (25-20, 25-18, 25-9) and 3-1 to Hannibal-LaGrange University (25-21, 16-25, 25-21, 25-16).

Cassandra Schwamborn had a big game in both losses. She finished the game against Mt. Mercy with a team-leading 11 kills in 35 attack attempts, and kicked it up a knotch with 12 kills in 37 attempts against HLGU.

In the Mt. Mercy game, Maggie Earney, Jordan Miller and Allegra Collette all tied for second on the team with three kills. Sydney Ellsworth had two kills and Cierra Howard had one kill.

Ellsworth finished the HLGU game with five kills. Payne had four. Miller and McKenzie Bollock had two kills and Earney, Collette, Miranda Marshall, Maddison Hiland and Katie Garcia each had one.

Howard was the Tigers? defensive leader in both games. She had 16 digs in the game against Mt. Mercy and 35 digs against HLGU.

The Tigers were coming off a devastatingly close five-set loss to Monmouth College (16-25, 25-19, 25-27, 25-20, 19-17) in Tuesday night?s home opener. Schwamborn had 17 kills in that loss and the duo of Lien and Ellsworth each had nine.

IWU moved to 4-6 with the losses and will be back in conference play on Saturday, Sept. 24, when they play Spalding at 10 a.m., and Eureka at 12 p.m., as part of the Eureka College triangular.
