James Harlan Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution met Saturday morning, Dec. 14, 2019, at the Veteran's Hall in Mt. Pleasant. Fifteen members attended. Hostesses Margaret Savage Carlson, Pat White and Patricia Woepking provided refreshments.
Regent Gayle Olson conducted a meeting after opening rituals.
President General Denise Doring VanBuren's message was delivered. She is a BlueStar mother whose son is currently stationed stateside, but spent Christmas 2017 in Afghanistan. She writes 'I ask you to pray for them, and for their families. If you have a loved one in service, please accept our profound gratitude for your family's sacrifice.”
A Service to America article was sent to DAR Magazine featuring Becky Wright and her Civil War Quilt Program presented at Iowa Wesleyan University. Carol Messer was commended for her Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award. Carol has been a DAR member since 1972 and has been active in many rural Iowa issues. Judy Rawson reported on the successful collection displays presented at the Winfield Museum.
Dec. 13 recognizes the birth of the National Guard. The National Guard is the oldest military organization in the United States. On Dec. 14 Wreaths Across America placed wreaths on graves of our country's fallen heroes in remembrance of their service. Dec. 15 commemorates the 1791 ratification of the Bill of Rights. Franklin D. Roosevelt designated Dec. 15, as Bill of Right Day in 1941.
Regent Gayle Olson shared her collection of Nativity scenes from around the world. There was a wide range of sizes, shapes, colors, materials, countries and cultures represented by the figurines. Her passion was evident in her presentation. We are reminded of State Theme to 'Be a beacon of light in service through DAR.”
The next meeting will be Jan. 25, 2020, at the Veteran's Hall in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. The program will be Black History Month presented by Betty Mullen.
