The regional writers’ group, Mt. Pleasant Scribblers, met Monday, Nov. 18 in the gathering space of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 902 S. Walnut Street.
Kathy Wiley began sharing time with her haiku submission to a poetry contest, Write Now. She started with a photograph of a storm rolling through southwest Montana that was taken by her cousin. The poetic gem that followed was about how a family would face tough times together.
Claudia Streeter gave each person a copy of a news article featuring Scribblers from April 1954. The article told a little about each writer with a sample of their writing. She would like each current member to write a little third-person biographical sketch to give her. She will compile them and make a document that can be kept with our recent anthology.
“Back Then When I Was Teenage Young” was written by Darlene Lutes after inspiration from an Alan Jackson song she heard on the radio. Her clever couplets included details about life, everything from Geode beach with transistor radios, movies at the Alamo Theater, Magic Eight Balls, and boys racing cars on country roads when gas was 32 cents.
“Patient Portal” vented the frustrations of Rita Davis with the on-line service that is supposed to provide information from the local doctors’ office. Time and again, the information for her that was expected could only be obtained by a direct phone call to the medical office. On the portal she saw billing information, but not the results of tests or prescriptions that had been sent to the pharmacy.
Marilyn Vincent and her husband Mike have been fortunate to have many educational and thrilling travel adventures. “Meaning of Travel” shared how the experience of actually walking through a place like Petra, Jordan, makes seeing current programs on discoveries in that world wonder more vivid. She could make a connection with the ancient Nabataeans who carved a glorious city into a wall of stone.
Martha Wiley passed around the current draft of her sixth book, “Gravity Wins,” that will go live on Amazon this week. She also read “My Dear Ginkgo” about a tree that grows in her backyard.
Scribblers are pleased to welcome new members who are interested in being part of a group, sharing efforts in the craft of writing. The Christmas meeting will be a box lunch in the fellowship hall of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 902 S. Walnut at noon, Monday, December 16.
