Will Gilchrist-Brock, a student at Lincoln Elementary School in Washington, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Jan. 12 and a chance at a $50,000 college scholarship. The school-level bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 29th annual National Geographic Bee.
Thousands of schools around the United States and in the five U.S. territories are participating in the 2017 bee. The school champions, including Will Gilchrist-Brock, will now take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers on that test in each state will then be eligible to compete in their state bee on March 31, 2017.
Winners from the state will participate in the National Geographic Bee May 19, which will air on the National Geographic channel at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
