Livestock Judging results from Washington County Fair
Jul. 30, 2023 9:59 am
4-Hers participated in the livestock judging contest at the Washington County Fair Monday, July 17. There were a record breaking number of teams competing from all across southeast Iowa.
Livestock judging consists of analyzing animals and measuring them against a standard that is commonly accepted as being ideal for that species. In a competition, youth analyze four animals of each species and rank them from best to worst. The animals used for the county fair livestock judging competition were all 4-H projects on the fairgrounds being exhibited by other 4-Hers.
Youth competed in teams and also for individual points at the county fair contest. Cash awards are given to the top team and trophies to the top judge in each age division.
The top senior team included Garrett Greiner, Peighton Ford, Charlotte Sieren, and Brynn Younge. The 2nd place senior team came from the Limecreek Livewires and included Adalyn Huston, Caedyn Huston, Blake Peck, and Payton Peck.
The top junior team included Brystol Younge, Emma Greiner, Preston Ford, and Cole Troyer.
The Washington County 4-H livestock judging team members have been practicing all spring and summer and will compete at the State Judging Contest the end of August. Contact the Washington County Extension Office, 319-653-4811, for more information on being a part of the livestock judging team or 4-H in Washington County.
