4-H and Clover Kid leaders from Washington County participated in their annual state training, ?The Heart of Belonging? on March 18. This training focused on how to create a safe, inclusive environment for all youth. Volunteers learned how to guide youth in developing a list of club or group expectations that accommodates all members, learned how to support youth with special needs, and learned where to find resources to help them in their role as caring adults. In addition, volunteers learned new activities to take back their clubs and groups to foster positive behavior and belonging.
?I look forward our leader trainings because the people gathered are so passionate about 4-H and impacting young people in positive ways,? said Amy Green, Washington County 4-H/Youth coordinator. ?In addition to the training materials, our leaders learn a lot from each other when sharing, comparing and brainstorming together. We have a great group of volunteers!?
4-H volunteers, as caring adults, are an important element of ISU Extension and Outreach?s youth-serving organization. Effective volunteers provide the experiences and positive relationships that enable 4-H youth to become productive citizens, outstanding communicators, effective leaders, and successful learners now and in the future.
Doug Colbert agrees. He has been a leader for the Riverside Ramblers for 33 years. He said he most enjoys ?watching the 4-H?ers grow through 4-H and then be successful in their professions.?
