Rachel Koehler and Debbie Lowe recently travelled with the Hills Bank Friends Club on the "Alaska, the Last Frontier" tour July 8-16, 2024.
They flew to Anchorage on the 8th, and after an overnight in Anchorage, they boarded the Deluxe Dome Rail to travel to Denali National Park, enjoying the scenery and wildlife along the route. At Denali they went on the Tundra Wilderness tour and were able to see the top of Mt. Denali (Mt. McKinley) as well as some wildlife and beautiful scenery. While at the park, they attended the Cabinnite Dinner Theater one evening.
Then, by motorcoach, they traveled south through scenic Broad Pass alongside the Alaska Range and Turnagain Arm to Girdwood for an overnight stay at the Alyeska Resort. There they rode to the top of Mt. Alyeska on Alyeska Resort Aerial tram for amazing views of seven hanging glaciers.
They traveled on to Seward on the scenic byway of the Chugach Mountains and Turnagain Arm heading down the Kenai Peninsula known as Alaska's Playground. At Seward they went on the Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise, viewing marine life and glaciers on board a high-speed catamaran.
Following a night in Seward they traveled north to the Sterling Highway and Soldotna with views of the Kenai River and then on to Homer where they could explore galleries, the Homer Spit, Alaska's Islands and Oceans Visitor Center/Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge and scenic views overlooking Kachemak Bay Research Reserve. The next morning included a Homer Harbor Dock tour.
The next day, they departed for Anchorage traveling through the mountains of the Kenai Peninsula on the Sterling Highway through Chugach National Forest and Kenai National Wildlife Refuge stopping at the Kenai Visitor and Cultural Center and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.
The final day, the 16th, was a long day traveling home. This was a spectacular trip and adventure for both Rachel and Debbie. They enjoyed the food, the scenery, the beautiful flowers growing everywhere and seeing all the wildlife. The Tour Director for their time in Alaska was very informative about the local history and tales of the places they visited, the wildlife and the amazing scenery
