Local resident wins big at state fair
Dave Miller, of rural Riverside, took top honors at the Iowa State Fair. Miller set three new state fair records which included his record-shattering 4.37-pound tomato. The other records were in the squash division at 56.1 pounds and in the kohlrabi division weighing in at 20.77 pounds. Dave Miller, of rural Riverside, took top honors at the Iowa State Fair. Miller set three new state fair records which included his record-shattering 4.37-pound tomato. The other records were in the squash division at 56.1 pounds and in the kohlrabi division weighing in at 20.77 pounds. Dave also won first prize with his field pumpkin weighing 87.7 pounds, watermelon at 57.47 pounds and his long gourd at 112.67 inches. He placed third with his onion at 2.67 pounds and his cabbage weighing in at 23 pounds. Dave also placed fourth with his giant pumpkin weighing 711 pounds and won first prize with his sunflower head. Dave has been raising pumpkins and jumbo vegetables now for 15 years and has won the state fair big pumpkin contest twice.
