Martha Hahn was hostess to eight Log Cabin Quester members .
Sheila Gerot conducted the business meeting. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and accepted. Norma Stutzman gave the treasurer?s report. She also shared a thank-you note from the Washington Historical Society for a donation made by the group.
Four members, Sheila Gerot, Sharon Hahn, Martha Hahn and Karen Lyons, attended State Day held recently in Red Oak. They reported a final successful sale for the group that is serving as the state preservation and restoration committee. They told of the tour of three homes, with one of them built in 1895.
Officer elections were discussed. Billie Nickolan volunteered to be the new historian.
Members answered roll call by showing a piece of old jewelery. Karen Lyons presented the program, ?Charms and Charm Bracelets.? Charms as a form of adornment, have been around for thousands of years. Depending on the culture and the time period in history, they have served many purposes. They have been used to ward off evil spirits, bring good luck, or carry messages of good wishes and prayers. They have been used to by royalty to represent wealth, as well as defining membership to other groups. At the end of World War II, soldiers returning home brought charms to their girlfriends. During the 1950s, charms were used to celebrate major rites of passage through charm bracelets. They lost popularity in the 1970s, but came back into vogue again in the 1980s. They have now become collectibles. Today, there are many charms designed by famed designers.
The group enjoyed refreshments. Next meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. on June 4, with Diane Anding as hosess.
