Sandy Weller of Washington was hostess to nine members of Log Cabin Questers Feb. 5, 2015.
Sheila Gerot called the business meeting to order. The treasurer?s report was given. Sharon read the report from the Christmas Dinner in December where the group and their husbands went to Ilo Miller?s in rural Kalona.
Karen Heineman presented the lesson on valentines. She showed a lovely big red heart she had made while working for Reader?s Digest. Karen won $50 with her talent in the homemade valentine contest! Valentines were named after St. Valentine in the third century. Karen shared some Valentine poems from early valentines. During the Victorian era Valentines became a little racy. Many beautiful and lacy valentines were exchanged in the early 19th century. Most of these were made in Europe. Later the United States started making valentines and in 1849 it was declared a holiday. Hallmark was the leader in making valentines. Today there are roses declaring Cupid's love, candy for valentines that makes Hershey?s $20 million day. O?Neil made the Kewpie doll, a popular gift of love. Las Vegas and Cupid's Wedding Chapel became a wedding destination. Hearts are a symbol of love. Karen closed her program by showing a heart quilt she had made.
Sandy served seasonal refreshments at the close of the meeting.
