Six members of the Log Cabin Questers journeyed to Sigourney to visit the costume shop, Curtains Up.
Jane Westendorf and her daughter, Lori, welcomed the group in the entry and sewing room where Jane spends most of her time. Members were amazed at the amount of material and patterns she was working with.
Lori and Jane told the group that they work with wardrobes for many high school and college plays and operas. They also costume professional operas and plays.
Jane reads all the play scripts and visualizes costumes. They have to have measurements of the characters before the costuming begins.
Then they utilize many costumes from their massive warehouse of inventory. Jane and Lori have costumes arranged by women and men as well as characters. Many outfits are arranged by eras.
Costumes are shipped and some hauled by the women to the different sites to be expertly fitted to the person portraying the character. They were working for several high schools in Iowa and getting ready to go as far as Lubbock, Texas.
A lot of their business comes from operas, which both of them enjoy attending.
The group then toured the square in Sigourney and enjoyed the new antique store, Strawbridge Arts and Antiques. Sharon Hahn hosted the group for strawberry pie or cheesecake at the Copper Lantern.
