MARSHALLTOWN ? Mt. Pleasant?s own Mark Kimzey was inducted into the Iowa Amatuer Boxing Hall of Fame on Saturday, August 11, at the Iowa Ametuer Boxing Annual Meeting and Hall of Fame Presentation. The event was hosted by Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown.
Kimzey was acknowledged for his 23 years as an amatuer boxing official and referee. He has also been the association?s secretary, treasurer and excecutive director over that time period.
The HOF induction doesn?t mean Kimzey plans on retiring. He will continue in all his capacities with the IAB.
?As any secretary of a volunteer organization knows, you pretty much have to die to get out of office,? Kimzey joked in a press release.
He also noted that the honor came for his service as an official and not for the handful of years he boxed.
?You?ll notice the award wasn?t for my three years as a boxer prior to my officials capacity,? Kimzey said. ?Because quite frankly, I wasn?t very good. Even that is stating it tactfully!?
