Martha Washington Questers meet
Apr. 25, 2022 2:27 pm
Sally Beezley hosted the March meeting of Martha Washington Questers No. 1032, with Virginia Reighard as co-hostess. President Marilyn Whitenack opened with invocation, roll call and reports from Treasurer Janet Peterson, as well as reading of previous minutes. After a correction to the minutes, all were approved.
Marilyn shared information from TV show “The Mo You Know” relating to April Fools Day. This day was popularized in 1700 with English pranksters playing practical jokes on each other, such as pinning tails or ”kick me” signs on an unsuspecting persons derriere.
In Scotland for instance, this became a two day event, starting with hunting the “gowk” or cuckoo bird, followed the next day with pranks such as pinning signs on others backs, usually becoming the butt of jokes.
In Ireland the tradition was to entrust the victim with an important letter, with that person reading the letter and asked to take it to someone else and so on. When opening it, it contained the words “send the fool further”. Most all pranks pointed to a slow-thinking, gullible person. The pranks continue through the world today!
Business included the previously discussed phone tree and each agreed we need to keep in contact with members to pass on sympathies, concerns etc. Annual chapter reports are due in March and payment of dues by April 1.
Several ladies will be attending State Day in Burlington April 23, 2022 and details will follow for drivers etc. Our June outing will be a celebration of our 40th year anniversary.
Sally gave us an amazing program on her quilts and information as to who and why they were made. Many lovely and beautiful ones were shown by this talented lady. On motion by Janet Peterson meeting was adjourned and Virginia served a delicious dessert to the group.
