Nov. 6, 2025 11:44 am
Southeast Iowa Union offers audio versions of articles using Instaread. Some words may be mispronounced.
IowaWINs (Iowa Welcomes Immigrant Neighbors) will host William Lopez, author of Raiding the Heartland: An American Story of Deportation and Resistance, and Nicole Novak who wrote the forward and was instrumental in research for the book, on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 2:00, in the Heatilator Performing Arts Center, 307 E Monroe Street, Mount Pleasant. The authors will introduce the key themes of the book — what took place and the effects on these communities.
The book chronicles several ICE raids on worksites in Midwestern communities, including Mount Pleasant. The raid which occurred in May of 2018, disrupted the lives of dozens of local families, but it also galvanized support for those families. The names of organizations and individuals have been changed for privacy reasons, but our story plays a prominent role in the book.
The event is free and open to the public.
