Maj. David Messerli, of Grimes and formerly of Fairfield, was selected as the best Special Branch Officer recruiter in the Army National Guard throughout all U.S. states and territories.
In his Condition of the Iowa National Guard speech to the Iowa General Assembly earlier this month, Maj. Gen. Timothy Orr, adjutant general of the Iowa National Guard, said Messerli?s recognition was just one of the significant awards presented to Iowa units and individuals in 2014.
Messerli is the son of Ralph and Linda Messerli of Fairfield. He taught science and coached wrestling for 15 years at Fairfield High School before being called to active duty. A member of the Iowa Army National Guard?s Headquarters Support Company, 109th Medical Battalion, out of Iowa City, Messerli and the medical battalion were on active duty from January 2003 until the spring of 2004 near Baghdad in Iraq.
When Messerli returned from deployment, he retired from teaching to take a fulltime position with the battalion and begin a new career path.
Messerli and his wife Diane have two daughters, Katie and Beth.
