The class of 1964 was the first senior class to complete a year in the new Mid-Prairie High School 50 years ago. Sixty-seven seniors graduated that year. The class enjoyed reminiscing and renewing old friendships at two events.
On Friday, Oct. 3, 33 of the 57 living class members met at the high school to enjoy pizza and finger foods and reconnecting. Senior Class President Russ Parcell welcomed everyone.
A memorial was given for 10 classmates who are deceased: Jim McGlumphrey (1973), Judy Eash Yoder (1974), Donna Schlabaugh (1989), Jack TeBockhorst (1994), Carol Batterson Miller (1996), Terry Berendts (1999), Ruth Bringman Herr (2001), Charles Kleinschmidt (2003), Fred Ellis (2012), and Donald Whetstine (2012). Class members who served in the military were also honored.
Superintendent Mark Schneider presented an informative program outlining the achievements of Mid-Prairie School and gave the class a tour of the building pointing out many changes since the building was opened in 1963. Special invited guests for Friday?s event who were unable to attend were Lola Marner, school secretary, and teacher Tracy Anderson.
On Saturday, Oct. 4, 31 class members and their spouses or guests gathered at the Clarion in Iowa City for a buffet dinner and more visiting and catching up on 50 years of stories and memories. Parcell welcomed everyone as there were several who could not attend both events. Deceased class members and those serving in the military were recognized. There were eight classmates unable to attend either event. Class members traveled from California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, and Texas, for the reunion. A thank-you to the reunion committee who put together a great event.
