Mt. Pleasant Scribblers meet
By Martha Wiley
May. 17, 2022 3:11 pm
The regional writer’s group, Mt. Pleasant Scribblers, met on Monday, May 16, 2022, at the First Presbyterian Church, 604 S. Walnut St. welcomed new members and had an informal session of shared writings. After a brief business meeting in which Martha Wiley agreed to serve a term as recording secretary and Kathy Castille offered to work on future anthologies, compiling selections from each of the members into a booklet. Eight people present shared the work they had recently completed.
Martha Wiley reported on her session with a writing coach who was reviewing her series of children’s books. One of the resources he recommended was Save the Cat! Writes a Novel by Jessica Brody, a book that details how to create a story-worthy plot line.
Kathy Casteel shared a cinquain she wrote about Gladys, the stuffed Opossum that she gave to her father as part of a running family joke. Writing this poetic offering required her to do a little research work on our North American marsupial.
Marilyn Vincent analyzed the frustrations that surrounded getting out the door to be on time for events and meetings. It was about the curse of needing to finish “just one more thing.”
“It’s a New Day” by Rita Davis tracked the changing views about pregnancy and pregnant women that she has witnessed. Everything from tacky insults and secrecy in the past to today’s ultrasound announcements and gender reveal parties.
In the 1972 Scribblers Anthology Claudia Streeter found offerings from members who were being honored in their passing. This included one from Marjorie Osier celebrating life in “Band Carnival Reflections.”
Mary Shy shared observations about her enjoyable time spent recently in the Brooklyn Heights, New York, neighborhood, dog sitting for her daughter.
In a tribute to her mother, Karen Osborne celebrated the achievements, wisdom, and love of her mother.
Brenda Smith picked up on the theme, sharing how she expressed herself at the passing of her own mother.
Scribblers are pleased to welcome new members who are interested in being part of a group, sharing efforts in the craft of writing. The next meeting, Monday, June 20, will be a luncheon at the home of Rita Davis, 1645 235th St., Mt. Pleasant. For more information, contact Karen Osborne, 319-367-5586.
