The regional writer’s group, Mt. Pleasant Scribblers, met Monday, Dec. 18, 2023, at noon for a Christmas luncheon in the fellowship hall of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 902 S. Walnut Street.
Those present included Kathy Wiley, Marilyn Vincent, Kathy Casteel, Karen Osborne, Claudia Streeter, Rita Davis, Chris Ryan, Valerie Kreutner, and Martha Wiley.
There was a shortened business meeting and a few of the Scribblers members shared what they had been writing.
Martha Wiley read a poem titled “Respect” that describes the way older people (like herself) move through a crowd. She then gave her website https://MowTomorrowBooks.com a demonstration run. This website will help her as she moves toward publishing her series of upper elementary science books, “Kids on the Move.”
Rita Davis passed around a picture of a great friend she met on a mission trip to Kenya. This woman leads a life of abundant gratitude. Her church trips to work in other countries are a continual source of inspiration. Rita also read her latest draft of the Christmas letter describing her family life.
Kathy Casteel brought the next in her “Old Harvey” stories. These are all based on experiences she had as a child and stories she has been told about her grandfather. His colorful but impoverished lifestyle in the coal mining country of Missouri did not diminish the richness of his personality.
Marilyn Vincent shared her remembrances of the year 2023. In addition to recovering from a variety of physical problems, she was able to have rich cultural experiences like visiting the Van Gogh exhibit and rewarding opportunities she had as a volunteer, contributing to her community.
Kathy Wiley had written a series of seven Haiku poems about the joy and beauty of the season.
Karen Osborne had been tempted to type something like “Christmas Letter 2023” into an Artificial Intelligence app and see what she got! Instead she wrote about Dec. 18, 1999, the day her mother passed away. She celebrated the strength of an awesome matriarch and described the total family support.
Scribblers are pleased to welcome new members who are interested in being part of a group, sharing efforts in the craft of writing. The next regular meeting, at 1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 15, will be in the gathering space at the north entrance of the First Presbyterian Church, 902 S. Walnut, Mt. Pleasant. For more information, contact Karen Osborne, 319-367-5586.
