The regional writers’ group, Mt. Pleasant Scribblers, met on Monday, Oct. 20, 2025, at 1:00 in the gathering space of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 902 S. Walnut Street.
Kathy Casteel sent two lovely poems describing freshly canned fruits, but she was unable to attend.
Kathy Wiley read a personal reflection on the recent service at the death of a young friend titled “Love, Grief, and Healing.” The family was supported in their loss by many friends.
“Getting Ready” was a description of preparations that Rita Davis was taking to be ready for a three-week, international mission trip. She will be in Kenya, Uganda, and Brussels.
Darlene Lutes found that many features of her historical research as an adult have led her back to the same places that she rode past as a child coming home on the school bus. “Serendipitous Route of Bus #7” looped her childhood sights riding east of New London into significant events in places like the Jim Town Road and the mountains of Colorado that she learned of later in life. So many unexpected connections.
“Meet Your Maker” by Claudia Streeter described her many trips out and about, navigating local events with her walker and a phone in her pocket. Aging brings challenges both from physical limitations and society’s expectations. Still, she is in no hurry to accept her “invitation to heaven.”
“Button, Button” was a clever description of the many styles and uses for buttons. Marilyn Vincent finished her reflection by sharing a meditation using a round button for a prayer guide. A button is hard and many things in life are hard. They hold things together and have holes that we can be thankful for. The variety of colors is a blessing; and being round, they are continuous and never-ending.
Martha Wiley described her two adventures in book publication. Complete Treasury of Kids on the Move has just been released by IngramSpark and is described on her website, www.mowtomorrowbooks.com. She has also
been writing a short novel about her great great great grandmother which is in proofing stage with the printer. Rebecca, Why Did She Run is a bit of historical fiction based on family stories, written in collaboration with daughter Michelle as illustrator.
At the end of the meeting, Marilyn shared that she had a poem selected for Lyrical Iowa which she will bring to the next meeting.
Scribblers are pleased to welcome new members who are interested in being part of a group, sharing efforts in the craft of writing. The meeting will be in the gathering space of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 902 S. Walnut at 1 p.m., Monday, November 17. The Christmas luncheon will be in December.
