Mt. Pleasant Scribblers meets at Presbyterian Church
By Martha Wiley
Apr. 19, 2024 3:18 pm
The regional writers’ group, Mt. Pleasant Scribblers, met Monday, April 15, 2024, at 1:00 in the gathering space of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 902 S. Walnut Street.
Valerie Kreutner invited the membership to consider being a reading buddy at Lincoln Elementary for an older elementary student. This program is coordinated by RSVP through the Fellowship Cup.
Kathy Casteel had four possible designs for the cover of the anthology that will be assembled this year. The group chose the picture of an iris but felt we could not go wrong with any one of the possibilities.
In addition Kathy had collaborated with Suzy Pool to develop pictures to go with Suzy’s verses written for the grandchildren. The combined effort of these ladies will be included in the Anthology.
Suzy had also written a meditative verse titled “Eclipse 2024.” It described heads “magnetically” turning up to watch the celestial event.
“Angling” by Karen Osborne described the many and varied experiences she shared with family members catching tasty fish. She progressed from learning to bait hooks as a child to trout fishing in a New Jersey stream to deep sea fishing with her husband and sons.
Kathy Wiley’s three new Haiku poems are entered into her poetry journal. Each entry has both a writing and an accompanying picture. The new gems are titled “Spring,” “Eclipse,” and “His Toy.”
Everyone who had battled through at least one sleepless night, understood exactly what Rita Davis had endured when she shared “4AM Sunday.” Phrases describing tossing and turning like “chicken on a rotisserie” or the ceiling fan making “gray noise” were so spot-on that they were funny!
“Peanut Butter Pie Hider,” by Martha Wiley, told the story about her advanced math class bringing in a pie to share on the same day that KTVO just happened to drop in to interview one of the students.
Darleen Lutes shared a story after her father’s passing. Her father had one remaining apple tree that was in its last season during his last season. He was known to have an amazing talent for baking pies, and he loved preserving applesauce for the winter months.
Scribblers are pleased to welcome new members who are interested in being part of a group, sharing efforts in the craft of writing. The next regular meeting will be at 1 p.m., Monday, May 20. Members will be gathering in the space at the north entrance of the First Presbyterian Church, 902 S. Walnut, Mt. Pleasant. For more information, contact Karen Osborne, 319-367-5586.
