'Mythical' Merlin

This little bird, relatively speaking, was spotted on a fence post Wednesday feeding on a field mouse, but quickly flew into a tree and continued to eat. It took some research and assistance from Stephanie Shepherd of the Department of Natural Resources and ornithologist Diane Porter to solve the mystery of the identity of this Merlin, which is a small falcon, sitting approximately 10 inches tall. They are not often seen in Iowa, though they are former nesters in the state.
