Fairfield — The Fairfield Public Library (FPL), in collaboration with the Southeast Iowa Sierra Club, invites the community to a hands-on, sustainability-focused event, Fix-It Friday: Jewelry Edition, on Friday, Jan. 16, 2026, from 6:00 to 8 p.m. at the Fairfield Public Library.
This free, all-ages program encourages participants to bring worn, tangled, or well-loved jewelry for learning, repair, and rediscovery. Local jewelry designers and repair specialists will demonstrate making and mending techniques, offer guidance on simple fixes, and share tips for extending the life of treasured pieces. Attendees may also bring mystery items to have experts suggest their potential value. Light refreshments and music will be provided, and the library will screen PBS Craft in America: Jewelry at 6:15 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.
Fix-It Friday reflects the Library’s growing investment of time and energy in sustainability-oriented programming — work that expands the traditional library mission beyond access to information to include practical skills, environmental responsibility, and community resilience. By promoting repair over replacement, the event highlights how small, creative acts can reduce waste, conserve resources, and strengthen local connections.
This program aligns with Fairfield Public Library’s participation in the Sustainable Libraries Initiative (SLI) Certification Program, a national framework that helps libraries embed environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic viability into their operations and services. The goal of SLI is to empower libraries to lead by example — modeling sustainable practices while supporting healthier, more resilient communities.
“Libraries have always been places where people come to learn, share knowledge, and care for the commons,” said Alecs Schmidt-Mickunas, Director of the Fairfield Public Library. “Fix-It Friday is one way we’re putting those values into action — bringing people together to learn practical skills, reduce waste, and rethink how we care for the things we already have.”
No experience is required, and all services are free of charge. Community members of all ages are welcome.
