Oct. 16, 2018 10:46 am
A partnership between Washington County Extension and Keota Elementary PTO is excited to announce a new After-School STEM Club is now taking registrations for the November club. This opportunity is open to any fourth through sixth grade Keota Elementary student who wants to experiment more with science, technology, engineering, and math. Each session will use an Engineering is Elementary and State 4-H curriculum. Washington County Extension & 4-H and Keota Elementary PTO are partnering together to offer additional and fun ways for Keota youth to interact with science more in a hands-on setting while making new friends and connecting with caring adults in the community.
The November session will meet Nov. 6, 13, 20, and 27 after school until 5 p.m. in the Keota Elementary Library. The unit is called 'Put a Lid on It: Designing Helmets.” Students will investigate how helmets protect the brain, parts of the brain, and how technology plays a factor in making more efficient helmets. They will diagram the brain, and use biomechanical engineering to design and build their own model helmet for a crash-test dummy helmet challenge. November STEM Club will be taught by Angela Conrad, Tanner Wenger with youth mentors Frankie Johnson and Bailey Sieren.
Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until October 30 at the Keota Elementary Office with limited space available. There is a fee due with the registration form made to Keota Elementary PTO.
Please contact the Washington County Extension Office, 319-653-4811 or amygreen@iastate.edu, with any questions about this STEM Club or how to get involved with other youth science activities.
