Annually the Washington County Fair Association invites the public to showcase their skills, trades, and hobbies through the Washington County Fair Open Class Exhibits. These are judged and displayed in the historic school house on the Washington County Fairgrounds. Karen Megchelsen serves as the open class exhibit volunteer superintendent and explains that the variety of exhibits come from all across the county.
2019 Open Class Exhibit results are:
Class 1-Bread - with Yeast: Rachel Carstensen won first place.
Class 2-Breads –no yeast: Barb Anderegg won first place.
Class 3-Cakes-no frosting: Lily Billups won first place and received $25 prize money from Freeman Foods (Wellman) and Jo Duwa won second place.
Class 7 – Cookies: Barb Anderegg won first place and received $25 prize money from JWs Foods (Kalona) and Judy Siren won second place.
Class 8 – Candy: Marilyn Klise won first place and Myra Farrier won second place.
Class 10 – Jam – Shelley Palmer won first place and Allen Brush won second place.
Class 13 – Canned Vegetables – Allen Brush won first place and Hailey Shultz won second place.
Class 14 – Pickles and Catsup – Allen Brush won first place and Hailey Shultz won second place.
Class 16 – Fine Arts-Painting – Carol Thornton won first and second place.
Class 18 – Photography – Black and White – Sally Hart won first and second place.
Class 18a – Photography - Color: Pat Smith won first place and Outstanding Art and Photography Award of a $25 gift card from Hills Bank. Sharon Scarf won second place.
Class 23 – China and Jewelry – Elizabeth Billups won first and second place.
Class 24 – Christmas in July: Marj Lins won first place and Judy Siren won second place.
Class 25 – Creative Arts: Jo Duwa won first place and Grace Conway won second place.
Class 26 – Country Crafts: Shawna Sieren won first place and Colton Wehr won second place.
Class 26B – Repurposed Art – Kamren Martin won first place.
Class 28 – Any Wood Article Painted – Jessica Goebel won first place.
Class 36 – Bags – Mary Northrup won first place and Judy Siren won second place.
Class 37 – Sewing/Stitchery – Jan Miller won first and second place.
Class 38 – Throw Pillows – Alicia Pacha won first and Sandy Beauchamp won second place.
Class 40 – Quilts – Antique – Marj Lins won first place and Jane Dallmeyer won second place.
Class 41B – Quilts – Machine Quilted – Linda Richards won first place and the Overall Judge's Choice Award of a $25 gift card from Hills Bank. Virginia Schuerman won second place.
Class 41C – Comforter/Throw/Pillow/Doll - Alicia Pacha won first place and Clarabell Vittetoe won second place.
Class 41E – Quilts – Wall Hangings – Donna Palmer won first and Nancy Schmidt won second place.

Class 45 – Cut Flower Specimens – Audrey Reed won first and Donna Palmer won second place.
Class 46 – Plants – Colton Wehr won first place and Jane Dallmeyer won second place.
