On May 13, American Legion Post #47 Commander Jim Kennedy and I, Department of Iowa Vice Chairman, addressed your city council. We are encouraging community support for a public awareness effort so that we can continue to do the great things that we, as a patriotic community, may have taken for granted.
While being a member of the local American Legion Post #47 is beneficial to the military veterans in Fairfield, it is equally important that we bring them the support as a community that is proud of their service to our country.
We count on them to raise the flag at our home football games, perform honors for their fallen comrades and their families, seek out and give scholarships and awards to our youth such as American Legion Boys State, Oratorical, Junior Shooting and Fifth Grade Flag Essay contest and most of all, to be a solid, unified voice on issues that protect this great land.
The American Legion Post #47 members, along with state and district officers, will be on hand for an open house Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the VFW Hall in Fairfield. They will have a state service officer present, as well as the Jefferson County Veterans Affairs representative, who are prepared to answer benefit and claim issues our brave veterans maybe facing.
I would encourage all military veterans to stop in our refreshments and visit with your fellow comrades and maybe even volunteer your services in some small way so that they may continue to be the asset that we have come to appreciate in Fairfield.
