Orchestra Iowa returns to Sondheim center

Orchestra Iowa will perform at 3 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts in Fairfield, Iowa. The orchestra will present a program featuring Beethoven, Kernis and Schumann.
Orchestra Iowa will perform one of the most recognized, yet rarely performed works of the symphonic repertoire ? Beethoven?s Fifth Symphony.
Sharing the stage with Beethoven is the Kontzertstück for Four Horns by Robert Schumann featuring the Orchestra Iowa horn section as soloists. American composer Aaron Kernis? Musica Celestis for string orchestra will open the program.
All patrons attending the performance are invited to Insight, an informative, informal discussion presented by Maestro Timothy Hankewich prior to the concert. Held in the Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts beginning at 2 p.m., the discussion will guide patrons through the historical, cultural and personal issues related to the program.
Founded in April 1921, Orchestra Iowa is one of the oldest symphony orchestras in continuous operation west of the Mississippi River. Its 82 professional musicians perform more than 120 public performances throughout Eastern Iowa each year, many of which can be heard on Iowa Public Radio and seen on Iowa Public Television.
