The Henry County Conservation staff is planning two programs at the Oakland Mills Nature Center.
The first is a trivia night on Thursday, Sept. 12, and the second is a presentation about Blackh Hawk's final resting place Sunday, Sept. 15.
For Trivia is for the Birds, set at 7 p.m. Sept. 12, pre-register a three- to five-person team via mycountyparks, Henry County, Events, on or before Monday, Sept. 9. The fee of $6 per person will be donated directly to the live raptor fund at Oakland Mills.
All questions will have a nature aspect, but not necessarily what players think. Be sure to brush up on general nature knowledge, but don't forget about music and movies.
Participants must be at least 14 years of age. Upon registering, put your team name in the 'Attendee” box at check out. A prize will be awarded to the winning team.
'If this event is successful, we hope to continue it on a regular basis,” said Cari Nicely, Henry County Conservation Department naturalist.
'Black Hawk's Final Resting Place” will be presented by Russ Fry at 2 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Oakland Mills Nature Center.
Fry is a historian from Burlington who has written several books on local history and directed several documentaries. His description of the program is: 'Ma-Ka-Tai-Me-She-Kia-Kiak, the Sauk war leader known to the American settlers as Chief Black Hawk, fought and lost a war in 1832 as he tried to retake his homeland. The history books say his stolen remains were destroyed in an 1853 museum fire in Burlington, Iowa. The history books are wrong.”
'Black Hawk's Final Resting Place” is a free program for all ages.
Preregistration is appreciated at mycountyparks, Henry County, Events, but not necessary.
For more information about either of these programs, contact the Henry County Conservation Department at 319-986-5067.
