AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY
The American Legion Auxiliary of the Allen-Jewett Post No. 47 recently held its first meeting of 2016 at the VFW post home, opening with a prayer, pledge of allegiance to the flag, and the auxiliary preamble.
Wes Edwards of the American Legion Post No. 47 was a guest at the meeting.
Correspondence was read by Secretary Darlene Vorhies from: Mary Littrell, volunteer state auxiliary representative for Veterans Hospital in Iowa City, thanking for donation which was used to purchase needed ladies lingerie; thank you from Mary Wilkerson, Governing Documents chairwoman; and read by Treasurer Shirley Kitch a thank you from the Hendricks family for a memorial donation.
Mary Littrell also shared from the latest First District Dispatch: the veterans are in need of lap robes and ditty bags?the robes need to be specific size; the volunteer office was moved to make room for a new chapel that opened in October; the old chapel will be a new emergency room entrance with a patient drop-off along with 10 exam rooms and a new trauma room which is to be completed in December; to be built is a $7.9 million operating room suite which will include six operating rooms and be better equipped to deal with infection control and patient safety. Vorhies submitted an article sharing activities of the local auxiliary for the latest issue of Dispatch.
Those present approved meeting in the evening beginning with the March 16 meeting, to see if it would help with attendance of auxiliary members and others interested who have daytime employment.
Kitch reported: $50 is sent bimonthly for veterans needs at the VA Hospital in Iowa City; $400 has been sent to State American Legion Auxiliary for a local high school junior to attend Girls State in June; Poppies have been ordered and received; $15 was donated to Fairfield Christian Church in memory of Jerry Hendricks; $15 was donated to St. Mary Catholic Church in memory of Joe Millane; $25 Walmart gift card was purchased to assist with Girls State expenses; and the auxiliary shared in the expense of the Nov. 11 veterans centerfold in The Fairfield Ledger.
Mary Andersen dropped off copies of the speeches given on Veterans Day by Girls Stater Lindsey Repp and Boys Stater Dakota Andersen. Vorhies noted she had spoken on Veterans Day to a two-county group of area individuals who have visual impairments.
