DES MOINES ? Katie Palmer, daughter of John and Becky Palmer, 15, of rural Keota, who is a member of West Chester United Methodist Church was honored by the Iowa United Methodist Church as recipient of this year?s Harry Denman Youth Evangelism Award.
This prestigious award is given to one youth, one clergy, and one adult layperson each year. It is awarded to those who exhibit outstanding efforts in evangelism by faithfully carrying out the mission of the church. In Iowa, nominations are considered in statewide competition, with the recipient in each category announced at the Annual Conference. Katie?s nomination cited her lifelong service in the missions and ministries of the church and her enthusiasm and willingness to serve. It particularly highlighted her efforts to begin and supervise an acolyte ministry to train children to light altar candles and, more recently, to gather community children to participate in a chime choir, which she initiated and leads. These activities are only the most recent examples of her service involvement not only at church but also as at school and in the community.
Her pastor, Marlene Janssen, said, ?Katie is an outstanding young woman and a blessing to all who know her. She embodies a passion for service and extends herself to others, regardless of age or background, with kindness and respect. Her leadership, not only in church but in the community as well, is inspiring. We can?t wait to see what God has in store for her.? Longtime church member Larry Cuddeback said, ?Katie?s quiet leadership and initiative in our church is exemplary and reflects her love of the Lord. Perhaps most remarkable, is that, from my observation, her efforts are solely to further the glory of God rather than her own. That alone not only elevates her to the status of role model for the youth of today, but for those of any age.?
