Panther boys roll again at Fairfield Invite

FAIRFIELD ? The Mt. Pleasant and Winfield-Mt. Union cross-country teams were both present in Thursday night?s Fairfield Invite, and again it was the Panther boys who won the day.

FAIRFIELD ? The Mt. Pleasant and Winfield-Mt. Union cross-country teams were both present in Thursday night?s Fairfield Invite, and again it was the Panther boys who won the day.
No. 6 Mt. Pleasant dominated the big school boys? race, with 18 points. The Panther girls finished fifth, with 97 points in the big school girls? race. W-MU finished fourth in both small school races, with 110 points from the boys and 120 from the girls.
Mt. Pleasant had four of the top five runners in the big school boys? race and seven of the top 10.
Logan Murray won the race, in 16:18. Cody Mertens finished second, in 16:57, and Adam Bodenham made it a one-two-three finish, in 17:01.
Kyle Vanderham was fifth place, in 17:16. Ryan Hutchinson was seventh, in 17:30. Jonathan Ita placed eighth, in 17:50, and Dalton Krum was 10th, in 18:09.
Abby Ryon ran the race in a fourth-place 20:07 to lead the Panther girls. Kelsey Notestein was 13th, in 22:33, and Delaney McDowell placed 18th, in 22:56 to give the Panthers three top-20 finishers.
Claire Holtkamp finished 30th, in 24:22. Kendall Dascher was 32nd, in 24:43. Taylor Murray was 33rd, in 24:48, and Aurora Vansickle was 42nd, in 27:14.
Gavin Bencze led the way for the W-MU boys, finishing fourth, in 18:17. Brock Fricke was 17th, in 19:43, and Bryant Holtcamp was 24th, in 20:32, to give the Wolves three top-25 finishers.
Asa Gipple was 29th, in 21:18. Dalton Spencer was 36th, in 22:13. Jackson Brown was 41st, in 23:17, and Nick Davis was right behind him with a 42nd-place 23:51.
In the small school race, it was Cecelia Hemsworth who had the best day for W-MU, with a fifth-place 22:25. Whitney Vantiger and Johndree Harris were 24th and 25th respectively in 27:29 and 27:34. Fionna Sparrow placed 31st, in 29 minutes flat, and Lauren Hagge was 35th, in 32:32.
Both schools will have a weeklong break before their next meet, at Rodeo Park in Ft. Madison. That race will take place on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m.
