August was such a busy month, packed with lots of fun things for all of us to do at Parkview Home! There were all of our regular activities like Bible study with Pastor Wolf, ?Nice Nails? manicures, ?The Great Outdoors,? Washer Toss, Bingo, ?Walking and Wheeling Around Wayland,? among many others. We also enjoyed some special events and programs throughout the month as well.
Emily Hoefer?s nephew, Dennis Hoefer and his wife, Linda, of Georgia came to surprise her on her birthday and hosted a birthday party for her, inviting her friends, residents and staff to help her celebrate! Also there to add to the festive party was Ned Francis, ?the One-Man Band,? singing and playing polka and other music on his banjo, keyboard and guitar for us while we munched on delicious birthday cake along with coffee and lemonade. Everyone had such a fun time at Erma?s Birthday Party and Polka Music program, and Erma was heard several times to say, ?That was the best birthday I ever had? as she grinned from ear to ear. We had a petting zoo of farm animals here for residents, families, children and visitors to enjoy.
It was mainly outside, although some of the animals ventured inside to see some residents who didn?t make it outdoors that day. Becky Lynn of the Brighton/Washington County Good Luck 4-H Club, the Lynn family, and friends of Becky and the Lynn family brought a calf, a mama goat and baby goats, a lamb, and a mama duck and baby ducks for all of us to see. Everyone had such a great time at this petting zoo! Becky does such a great job and is so knowledgeable with the animals, and everyone she brings with her does a super job as well.
About 15 kids with Ide Gymnastics came to perform tumbling and trampoline routines outside for us. One thing residents and guests especially enjoyed was when some of the students jumped and tumbled over volunteers, administrator Bill Grimm, and coach Jeff Ide. What fun we had watching all of the gymnastic students share their talent with us! Wendy Pusey and her piano students came for a piano music recital and visit with us. We had a nice time listening to all of the songs they played for us on the piano. Lydia Rotzinger held an Art and Painting class, teaching us how to paint a neat picture of a tree with a swing, sky and sun. We have very artistic and talented residents and visitors who participated in this class.
Since August was National Fair Month, we had some activities all throughout the month within that theme. We had ?A Taste of the Fair? social where we sampled various ?fair foods? including corn dogs, kettle corn, caramel corn and lemonade. We also had a great time playing fair-themed games including Ring Toss, Washer Toss, Pingpong Ball Toss, and Beanbags and Cans Toss for prizes of stuffed animals, soft smiley-face balls, smiley-face pencils and other fun prizes. And we enjoyed various music concerts throughout the month, including a country western themed music program by ?Happy Memories,? a gospel music program by Jerry Bartachek, piano and organ music with Mary K. Diers, and a country western record player program with Pastor Dave Forrester, among other music programs. We had a very informative and educational program about maple syrup and the process of getting it from trees and making it. The program was given by Cari Nicely and Trenton Hoekstra, Henry County naturalists. They gave us a test ? a ?Taste test,? of which came out of a tree and which was store-bought. Many guessed right while others thought the two tasted identical. Many times throughout the month we went ?Wheeling and Walking Around Wayland,? wheelchair rides and walking around town, as well as times of sitting outside on our patio just soaking up some sun and enjoying the outdoors.
Tom Fabian and his wife and children of Heber City, Utah, had a wonderful visit with grandmother Marie Lowe. Tom Hesseltine?s family hosted a birthday party for him on a Sunday afternoon, inviting all residents, employees, volunteers and visitors to help him celebrate.
Katlyn, Emma, Noah, Phillip, Riley, Titan and Brooklin are just a few of the youngsters who have brightened our days with their fun visits. We appreciate all of the youth who have come in to see us during the month.
Cooter, Roscoe, Bobby, Pete, Bella and Chip are just a few of our ?furry friends? who have come to visit us throughout the month. We?re always glad for our pet visits.
Many residents, employees, volunteers and visitors have recently finished putting together a jigsaw puzzle of a cow and her calf along with sheep in a pretty little pasture. It?s amazing how much fun and conversation one jigsaw puzzle can generate.
We enjoyed many grilling sessions with Jim and Janice Hester, Royce Roth and Stan Meyer. They have grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, pork patties, and chicken breasts, among other meats for us to enjoy at dinner. Everything has tasted delicious, and nothing beats that grilled flavor!
A special "thank you" to Mike Bates, Phyllis Schlatter, Donnie Davison, Gerry Klopfenstein and others who have shared garden produce with us to enjoy, such as sweet corn, tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, peppers and cucumbers, among other tasty goodies. We have enjoyed it so much!
Marlene and Marion Leichty and Washington Mennonite Church shared the centerpieces with us for our dining room tables during the month. They were teapots with pretty bouquets of colorful flowers in them. Thank you to members of Washington Mennonite Church for providing these neat centerpieces for us.
