October was filled with many fun events and activities to entertain all of us here at Parkview Home! Besides all of our many usual activities like Wednesday devotions with Pastor Schooley and Eicher Mennonite Church, Baseball Toss, Skip-Bo card game, record-player music and history program with Pastor Forrester, Coffee Club, and Wheel of Fortune, we had some special events and programs as well. I?ll share with you just a few of those.
We had a great time bowling and playing golf together with Elijah, Kera, Anna, Amayah, Lane, Bella, and Lily, seventh- , eighth- , and 10th-graders from WACO High School. Cari Nicely came to give a very informative and educational program about bats. We enjoyed ourselves at a baseball party, munching on baseball-decorated cupcakes, popcorn, Baby Ruth candy bars, along with pop. We welcomed many family members in for our Resident and Family Potluck Supper. Parkview Home provided the pulled pork and pulled turkey for sandwiches, drinks, table service, and ice cream from our soft-serve ice cream machine. Families brought in a wide variety of tasty dishes including salads, vegetables and desserts, among other things. There was about everything you could think of, including deviled eggs, coleslaw, sweet potatoes, escalloped corn, cherry pie, and carrot cake, just to name a few ? plenty of good food; no one went away hungry, that?s for sure. We played Pumpkin Ring Toss, throwing plastic rings onto a tall, straight stem of a pumpkin. Who knew that a pumpkin and a few rings could provide so much fun and laughter. Thanks, Carol, for the neat idea! We held an ?Orange Social,? with all food and drink of that color, including carrots and dip, pumpkin and cream cheese doughnut holes, orange slices and orange pop. We played ?Where?s the Black Cat?? ? a fun game that got us all moving around looking for these cute stuffed animals and finding them in a variety of creative hiding places. Grand prize winners at this game included Thelma Mahan, Virginia Soto, Erma Hoefer and Carl Reschly. All who participated seemed to have a really fun time. We also played ?Halloween Memories,? a game that made us use our thinking caps. Lynda Murray, our ?Dietitian Magician,? conducted a Halloween cooking class with us. She made Perfect Pumpkin Crunch and shares, ?This recipe is absolutely divine! It is so easy to make.? She also made Witches Hat Treats. Each treat was delicious, and she gave many useful tidbits of information along the way, including the health benefits of various ingredients that were used. We had a fun Halloween party. We also had a Halloween-themed supper featuring swamp soup, spooky eyes, witches hair, cauldron cream, and witches brew. Jim and Janice Hester, volunteers, were kind enough to share their time with us, helping most all of our residents hand out lots and lots of candy to area ?trick-or-treaters? on Halloween night. Jim reports that 208 ?trick-or-treaters? came through our doors, and we were glad to see each and every one. We had ladybugs, princesses, football players, witches, cowboys, cats, and many other costumes represented that evening. What a wonderful time everyone had with this event!
Many residents and employees were in attendance for a tribute held for our friend, Jean Hertig. We will miss Jean, and we extend our deepest sympathy to her family.
Riley, Shaylee, Noah, Emma, Titan, Nicole, and Kyra are just a few of the children who have brightened our days with their visits during the month.
Orco, Rusty, Precious, Sissy, Sophie, Chip, Pete, and Bella are just a few of our many furry friends that have visited us throughout the month.
Residents, employees, volunteers and visitors are currently working on ?Dogwood Chapel? a Thomas Kinkade Dimensions and 3-D effects jigsaw puzzle.
Pork patties, chicken, brats, hot dogs and hamburgers are the delicious means that Stan Meyer, and Jim and Janice Hester, have grilled for us all throughout the month.
A special ?thank you? to all of our wonderful volunteers who have shared their time and talents with us during the month, helping with many different things.
Miniature pumpkins wearing either straw hats for the boys or autumn-themed bows on the stem for the girls, with decorated faces for each were the centerpieces for our dining room tables this month. Pleasantview Mennonite church provided these cute little centerpieces for us, and they generated lots of smiles and conversation.
Marie Lowe enjoyed visits this month from her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Gene Alvine of Loveland, Colorado, as well as her grandson, Tom Fabian, of Heber City, Utah. She was also surprised on her 99th birthday when her children came and brought in homemade sweet rolls made by Virginia Tschantz to all residents and employees. With a tear in her eye, Marie appeared to be very touched after everyone sang ?Happy Birthday? to her.
