PARSON TO PERSON: Hold Unswervingly
By The Rev. Dave Forrester
Aug. 22, 2019 6:44 pm
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. (Hebrews 10:23 niv).
Have you ever been accused of not finishing what you have started? When I was a teenager running cross country, to be last was tough on the ego. You are worn out, tired, and no one to cheer you on. You feel like a failure.
Looking at this passage about faith, Paul tells us to stay with what you believe for the long haul. Don't give up even when trials seem hopeless. To swerve means to turn aside or cause to turn a side sharply. To unswerve is the opposite holding firmly to what you believe.
'In a society like ours where Christ is not loved or His standards honored, where God's word is widely ignored and the Christian Faith often dismissed as either incredible or unattractive, believers must be firm and unswerving in the confession of their hope (Raymond Brown).”
Like the runner in the race you keep going even if you are coming in last. Hebrews 11:1 says 'Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Let me encourage you in whatever or wherever you are and you feel that you are the only believer following Christ; Remember Christ has promised that He will never leave us or forsake us.
'The Christians hope for the overthrow of war and selfishness in the earth and the coming triumph of the Christian spirit is beautifully set forth by the English Poet, Lewis Morris:
There shall come out of this noise a strive and groaning
a broader and a juster brotherhood,
a deep equality of aim, postponing
all selfish seeking to the general good.
There shall come a time when each shall to another
be as Christ would have him - brother unto brother (amg publishers).”
In daily life let us hold unswervingly to our faith in Christ.
Have a great weekend.
