Parson to Person - Protect your life source
I live just west of town. When we first moved in, we noticed the water. It was hard, not really drinkable, and put rust in all our appliances. Our source was three different wells. In a few short years, the area decided to hook up to city water in Mt. Pleasant. It cost us, but it all saved money. I stopped replacing water heaters every two years! The Babylonians had encircled the City of Jerusalem and cut off its food supply. The question was how long could they hold out? That?s what the Babylonians kept wondering. A month passed, then two, then an entire year. How could they keep surviving? The secret to Jerusalem?s survival was in a spring. Hezekiah had cut a 1,777 foot tunnel through rock to an underground spring; it passed under the city walls to a reservoir called the Pool of Siloam. Without this life source of water, God?s people would have gone down in defeat.
Just another Bible story, right? Wrong! God gives us a very important lesson if we only pay attention. To live victoriously in life you must 1) Know your life?s true source; 2) Protect it; 3) Draw from it daily.
When our security or strength, or our self-worth or strategy for living comes from any other source than God, the enemy can easily defeat you. Everything you need comes from God. He alone is your life source. ?For I am come that you might have life, and have it to the full.? (John 10:10)
Most of us never realize our relationship with God must be protected. Busyness, burdens and bummers come to everyone, and they try to invade your life and take your time, your priorities and your energy. Satan?s attack against you is distraction. Distract you from your life source, cut you off from your needed supply.
A day without reading God?s Word and prayer is a set-up for failure. Prayerlessness is carelessness. You think, ?But I?m doing ok, and I don?t pray much or read the Bible much.? Most likely you haven?t come up against much of a test. And when it comes, without an established life source to draw from, you will struggle to succeed, and you will cave in. Cave to temptations, to lust or greed. Cave to selfishness and self-protection. And you?ll have all the excuses to blame others.
But is that how you really want to live? If not, I encourage you, come and drink of the water of life daily (Rev. 22:17). It is your life source.
