PACKWOOD -- This year, Pekin Elementary is celebrating student success by recognizing students of the month.
The elementary using a system call PBIS, which stands for Positive Behavioral & Intervention Supports. PBIS is an approach that schools can use to improve school safety and promote positive behavior. PBIS has schools teach kids about behavior, just as they would teach about any other subject, such as reading or math. PBIS recognizes that kids can only meet behavior expectations if they know what the expectations are. A hallmark of a school using PBIS is that everyone knows what is appropriate behavior. Throughout the school day -- in class, at lunch and on the bus -- kids understand what's expected of them.
For Pekin's PBIS system, the school uses the term PRIDE. Each letter of PRIDE stands for specific characteristics. These include:
' P = purpose: demonstrating what is expected in all areas of the building and the bus
' R = respect: demonstrating respect to staff and students
' I = individual responsibility: demonstrating responsibility for their actions
' D = discipline: demonstrating self-control in and out of the classroom
' E = excellence: demonstrates excellence in all areas
Teacher nominate students in the elementary school who demonstrated the specific characteristics of Pekin PRIDE. These students are then recognized during an assembly and receive special prizes.
