PACKWOOD ? The Pekin FFA Chapter will be hosting a showing of the documentary ?American Meat,? a panel discussion and a meal Friday at Pekin High School.
The movie ?American Meat? is set to begin at 8:30 a.m.
The movie is a solutions-oriented macroscopic documentary surveying the current state of the U.S. meat industry. Featuring Joel Salatine, Chuck Wirtz, Fred Kirschenmann, Steve Ells, Paul Willis and many other farmers across America, it takes an even-handed look at animal husbandry.
The film explains how America arrived at its current industrial system, and shows feedlots and confinement houses, not through hidden cameras, but through the eyes of the farmers who live and work there.
From there, the film introduces the current revolution developing in animal husbandry, led by Salatin. The film introduces many farmers across the country who have changed their life to start grass-based farms, and it highlights everyday tangible solutions that people can take to change agriculture in America.
Pekin FFA Chapter advisor Juston Lamb said the panel discussion following the screening, will include producer/director Graham Meriwether, Iowa State University Extension Livestock Specialist Byron Lue and area producers.
The event will conclude with a meal. The cost is $5 per person, and those who would like to eat at the school should make reservations with Lamb by emailing juston.lamb@pekincsd.org.
