PACKWOOD ? Pekin Elementary School is looking for volunteers again this year to work with kindergartners through second-grade children who need a little extra attention.
Volunteers in the Friends of Education program will read to a child or have a child read to them, play an educational game or put together a puzzle. The looking and listening activities help develop or build language skills forming a solid foundation for later school success. The goal is to help children realize their own self worth.
Volunteers also are needed to listen to first-grade children read. Reading aloud expands a child?s vocabulary and is a wonderful way to share the joy of reading. It is one of the best ways to create a love for reading. The child who develops a love for reading gains a lifelong desire to read and learn. These volunteers are called Popcorn Readers.
Each of the programs begin the first part of October and continues through April.
To volunteer, call Michelle Glosser at Pekin Elementary School, 319-695-3707 or 641-661-2351 or leave a message with Diana Parcell, the elementary secretary.
