ANDY HALLMAN/Ledger photo Carol Meyers, director of Cornerstone Community Well, left, presents donation checks to Vicki Tillis, representing military veterans in Jefferson County. One check for $80 was given to the Fairfield VFW to purchase two flags for the Avenue of Flags. A second check, for $122 was given to Freedom Rock of Jefferson County. The remaining $1,821 from the CCW's Piece of the Pie fundraiser will be used by CCW to assist and educate financially struggling families in the county. The fundraising event was held during CCW's open house Memorial Day weekend. Tours were given of the facility, including the interview setting, classrooms for life skill workshops, and visitors learned about volunteer opportunities. Upon departure, visitors were invited to select one of 60 homemade pies for a donation and encouraged to educate someone else about CCW as they shared their pies. CCW believes in making connections that foster positive change in the community. Because of this, veterans were selected to receive 10 percent of the Memorial weekend donations in honor of their sacrifice and service to the country. For information, email ccw@lisco.com. Tillis served eight years in the U.S. Army and was one of the bakers who donated a pie for the Piece of the Pie fundraiser.
