Project extravaganza to provide hands-on learning

Washington County 4-H invites the public to come spend the day with them on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. - moon, learning about a variety of project areas through hands-on practice, building and creating. Washington County 4-H is hosting a Winter Project Extravaganza for any youth fourth grade and older. There are a variety of workshop offerings to come for one or all. Pre-registrations required by Nov. 26. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis with payments sent to the Extension Office.
9 a.m. - noon Intro to Welding is open to fifth grade and above to create two winterthemed metal arts. Each participant will learn basic welding, terms, safety, and tips with hands-on practice at the Kirkwood Regional Center in Washington. Participants will create and take home their own snowman made of horse shoes and reindeer made from rebar.
9 - 10:30 a.m. Hats for Heroes is open to beginning and advanced tailors to put sewing skills to use to give back. This workshop will provide the pattern to sew child- size surgical hats that will be donated to the U of I Children's hospital. These fun, child-themed scrub hats have become popular with children to select their own before surgeries. This workshop is free to attend but atendees must bring required supplies for project. List provided upon registration. This session will be taught by 4-H'er Sierra Gillis and her mother Anna Gillis with the help of area volunteers who have been sewing Hats for Heroes as a local project since winter of 2017. Open to fourth grade and above.
9 - 10:30 a.m. Winter Wonderland Acrylic Canvas Painting will learn the acrylic pour technique while using colors to simulate a winter wonderland on canvas. Kelly Ross will lead this workshop. Open to fourth grade and above. All participants will make their own canvas painting.
10:30 a.m. - noon Fused Glass Snowflake session will teach how to cut glass for art and what is important about coefficients and melting points. Open to sixth grade and above. All participants will make their own glass snowflake ornament.
10:30 a.m. - noon Christmas Cookie Craze session will teach with hands-on practice how to use certain frosting techniques and tips. Each participant will learn five designs, practice, and create their own design for the cookie decorating contest at the end of the session. Open to fourth grade and above. Participants will decorate five cookies to take home and a new frosting tip.
Youth are encouraged to come, listen and learn with hands-on experience to boost knowledge and spark new project interests while having a good time, meeting new friends and gaining new skills. Preregistration is required of all workshops and will fill on a first-come, first-served basis.
