The Lincoln Elementary LEGO League Team ?PURE H2O? competed at the Southern Iowa regional tournament on Saturday, Dec 7.
The team members were challenged to solve problems associated with natural disasters. They programed their LEGO robot, named H20, to complete tasks and collect supplies on the challenge board. Their project this year was to research water purity and problems with water after natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes and drought.
The team joined forces with John Hays, founder of Hays Pure Water For All, to build special water purifiers. These filters sanitize water and protect against the spread of cholera in poverty- and disaster-stricken areas of the world. Students constructed enough water filters for 25,000 people to drink safe water and then sent these filters to be personally delivered by Hays during his recent trip to Cuba in November.
The team placed second in core values and teamwork and third in the overall tournament of 38 teams. PURE H2O will compete Jan. 17, at the state tournament in Ames.
