Regional 4-H groups head to Crooked Creek camp
Jun. 24, 2021 7:52 pm
4-H junior members filled two days with outdoor adventures, fun in the sun and team building activities on June 8 and 9 at Crooked Creek Christian Camp in Washington. ISU Extension’s Region 19 (Iowa, Johnson, Keokuk and Washington Counties) work together to offer this camping experience to their fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade members.
Washington County had 25 junior members attend the camp with three high school counselors — Carmen Sieren, Emma Stalder and Zoe Fisher — leading the way.
On June 8, there was a total of 48 campers from Region 19 and a total of 42 campers on June 9.
Both days featured a variety of activities, including orienteering, llama animal science, canoeing, fishing, waterslide, mindfulness exercises, pottery and more. Special guest presenters included Washington County Conservation, Washington County Extension, and Water Rocks from ISU. A community veteran came to speak about flag etiquette and taught 4-H members how to properly fold an American flag as well.
4-H junior members enjoyed meeting other 4-H’ers from neighboring counties and spending time together. The “magic” of camp was in full effect, one first-year camper even saying, “Today was the best day ever!”
“The learning, bonding and growing that happens at 4-H Junior Camp is so special,” said Washington County 4-H/Youth Coordinator, Amy Green. “As staff, I love getting to spend time with these 4-H’ers to really get to know them and see them in action. And then watching them grow for the next seven to nine years in our program is so rewarding.”
