Jefferson County Relay for Life team captains met Tuesday at the Jefferson County Health Center to discuss plans for the May 14 relay.
Team captains were asked to turn in team registration forms and T-shirt sizes by Thursday to Kortney Heald or Jean Keller in order to guarantee shirts for their members. Thirty-six teams are signed up to participate and hope to meet their $57,000 goal through donations, a quilt raffle, luminaria sales, fundraisers, a silent auction of team baskets and other activities.
Upcoming fundraising events include a spaghetti supper from 5-7 p.m. April 8 at SunnyBrook Living Care Center. During the supper, bids will be taken for a silent auction of gift baskets. Dexter Laundry is raffling two ?Summer Fun? packages. Raffle tickets can be purchased from Dale Sue Glass at Dexter Laundry. Winners will be drawn April 8.
Teams are creating theme baskets for a silent auction during the relay. No individual items will be auctioned, so organizers stress all items donated by teams be placed in a basket, box or other type of container with a tag stating the team name, basket theme, a list of the items and the total value of the basket. Other team competitions include the ?Purplest Campsite? and a decorated T-shirt contest.
Some relay activities will require preregistration. Locks of Love donors who plan to have their hair cut and styled during the relay must preregister by 3 p.m. May 14. Other activities require preregistration and a little bit of talent. Relay Idol will feature local talent competing for a cash prize. Registration fee is $10.
The popular Miss Relay Pageant returns this year with a few new twists. Men must be at least 16 years of age to enter. Those vying for the title will compete in talent and evening gown events. Evening gowns must be appropriate for a family atmosphere. Participants also will be asked to answer a randomly drawn question during the contest.
For information or to preregister for any event, contact Heald at kortney@iowatelecom.net.
The next Relay for Life meeting is 5:30 p.m. April 19 in the Jefferson County Health Center. Team captains and committee members are encouraged to attend.
