Jazz service Sunday in Fairfield Central Park
First Presbyterian Church in Fairfield will be having a jazz worship service at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at the Fairfield Central Park Ron Prill Bandstand.
A 16-piece jazz big band will provide the music interspersed with prayers, scripture readings and a message from the Rev. Joseph Phipps, pastor of First Presbyterian.
The community is invited to enjoy this unique service. Those attending should bring a lawn chair and snacks.
Libertyville church plans fundraising supper
Faith Methodist Church in Libertyville will have a carryout or dine-in supper Wednesday, Oct. 2 at the church.
Supper will be available 5-7 p.m.
The menu will include beefburgers, barbecued pork, baked beans, slaw, bar cookies.
A freewill donation will be collected for the meal. Proceeds will support the Libertyville Childcare Center.
Mt. Pleasant Zone LWML Fall Rally Oct. 5
The Mt. Pleasant Zone of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League will hold their annual Fall Rally on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Zion Lutheran Church in Wilton.
Registration and a light breakfast begin at 8:30 a.m. The meeting and program is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon with lunch included.
The theme is John 6:35 'I am the bread of life; whoever comes to Me shall not hunger and whoever believes in Me shall not thirst.” The keynote speaker is Daniel Sanchez, director of Camp Io-Dis-e-Ca in Solon. Camp Io-Dis-e-Ca is a Christ-centered camp that promotes and provides education, recreation, and inspiration for individuals and groups of all ages with distinctive Lutheran programs.
The LWML is a recognized auxiliary of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and the Mt. Pleasant Zone consists of women from LCMS churches in Burlington, Fairfield, Fort Madison, Keosauqua, Mt. Pleasant, Muscatine, Wapello, and Wilton.
Guests are welcome to attend.
Musical program set at historic Bentonsport church
'A Homecoming of Musical Talent” is planned at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Historic Bentonsport Presbyterian Church in Bentonsport.
The program will include vocal and instrumental music, popular tunes, old favorites, patriotic and inspirational music.
A freewill donation will be collected and used for church restoration and upkeep.
The program is sponsored by the Bentonsport Improvement Association.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
Salem Friends plan hayride
Salem Friends Church will host its annual hay ride at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5.
After the hay ride, a chili and dessert potluck, with hot dogs and s'more provided, will be held.
The free, family-friendly event is open to anyone is the Salem area.
Car exhibit at Mt. Pleasant church Oct. 6
The Twenty~Forty Sunday Study Class of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant will host a display of classic and collector cars in the church parking lot from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6.
Members of the class will be grilling and have the extras for lunch, available for a freewill donation. Those donations will be given to the local food pantry at The Fellowship Cup.
There will be a bouncy house for the kids.
Cars will be from members, friends and family. Anyone who has a classic or collector car and willing to have it have on display can contact Matt Schimmelpfennig or Karen Brimhall.
The rain date is Sunday, Oct. 13.
PW Women hold meeting
The Presbyterian Women's Circle met Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the Campbell Room of the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.
Jane Fehr provided refreshments and Esther Bordwell provided inspiration for the meeting.
It was announced that the Special Offering for September and October will go to the Washington County Enrichment Foundation.
Julia Gamon reported on missionaries Greg and Chris Callison, who are currently on the West Coast to raise funds for their mission, Gamon led the study for the meeting.
Wednesday, Sept. 18, the Presbyterian Women had their Fall Dessert gathering. Fourteen women enjoyed refreshments provided by Deb Helmick, Betty Beenblossom and Wilma Wright.
Jane Fehr led devotions for the meeting, and Kitch Shatzer presented the program on the Bible school she taught on the Spirit Lake reservation in Devils Lake, South Dakota, and on the Synod Gathering for Presbyterian Women that she attended in Ames.
Members were reminded of the Fall PW meeting in Fort Madison on Saturday, Oct. 5.
The meeting was concluded with prayer led by Betty Colby.
Mt. Pleasant Faith Lutheran Church hosting ice cream social
The annual ice cream social for Son Shine Academy Preschool will be 5-6:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, at Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant.
Beefburgers, hot dogs, applesauce, veggies, chips, an assortment of desserts, and homemade ice cream will be served.
A free will donation will be taken.
In addition, a silent auction will be held for several pieces of Son Shine Academy's original artwork.
Proceeds from the evening will benefit Son Shine Academy's scholarship fund and community outreach.
The community is invited to attend, especially families of past and present students of Son Shine Academy.
St. James Catholic holding God's Acre Sale
The 68th Annual God's Acre Sale will be on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 5-6, in St. Paul.
The charity auction begins the night of Oct. 5 with the HTC Junior Class serving a pork loin dinner, made by the Lee County Pork Producers, starting at 5 p.m.
The charity auction will begin at 6 p.m. A pellet grill will be raffled at 10:30 p.m.
The auction resumes at noon Oct. 6, starting with the grain sales.
A turkey dinner with all the trimmings will be served from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. A lunch stand will be open throughout the afternoon and evening, serving turkey and roast beef sandwiches and homemade pies.
Raffles for a grand prize of $5,000 cash and a second prize of a $1,000 cash prize will be held. Tickets are available the day of the auction or can be purchased from members of the parish. Winners do not need to be present to win.
St. James Quilters will be selling raffle tickets for a queen size hand pieced and quilted quilt. Tickets are available the day of the sale also, or from any quilter.
