Richard E. Echternacht, 69, of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away Friday, October 19 in the care of Hospice. Richard was born in Des Moines, Iowa, February 6, 1949. He worked for the MHI in Mt. Pleasant for many years, and later continued work in the mental health field in Aberdeen, South Dakota; and throughout New Mexico. In Mt. Pleasant, he was a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church, and a member and officer of the Masons, Commandry, the Shriners, Iris City Coin club, and Ham Club in Mt. Pleasant. He taught at Iowa Wesleyan College and at Southeastern Community College. Richard and Mary moved to Florida, in 2011.
Richard is survived by his wife, Mary; two children, Kim (Chris) Klett, of Gilbert, Arizona; and Rich (Karina), of Mesa, Arizona; 4 grandchildren: Alexandria (Seth) Gneck, Shelby Klett, Christian Klett (Victoria), and Heather Echternacht; and one great-grandson, Kai Klett. One brother, Gary Echternacht (Phyllis), of Trenton, NJ, also survives. Donations can be made to his wife Mary, Suncoast Hospice (in St. Petersburg), or to a no-kill animal shelter of your choice. Richard requested no funeral services, and his ashes will be scattered at a later date.
