Applications are now being accepted for the Donna Manfull 209 Scholarship for High School Journalism Excellence. The scholarship was established by former students, colleagues, friends and family in honor of longtime Washington High School journalism adviser Donna Manfull.
Manfull, who lives in Washington with her husband, Sid Manfull, taught in the Washington school district for more than 30 years ? serving as journalism teacher at the high school from 1985 to 2003. Not only did Manfull teach the who, what, where, when, why and how of reporting, she also instilled the importance of hard work, equality, social responsibility, higher education and many life lessons in her classroom ? 209 ? at Washington Senior High School. To honor Manfull's commitment to both education and her students for more than three decades, one senior graduating from Washington Senior High School will be awarded a one-time $500 scholarship to attend a two- or four-year college or university of their choice. Preference will be given to students who are majoring in either journalism or education, and are in need of financial assistance.
To apply, complete the application form which can be picked up at the Washington High School counselor's office and write a 500-word essay on ONE of the following three topics:
1) Which teacher has had the biggest impact on you, and what lessons have you learned from that individual that will help you succeed in your next chapter of life?
2) If you are planning on going into education, what will your specialty be? Why are you choosing to go into the education field and what life lessons do you feel are essential to teach in the classroom?
3) If you will be studying journalism, what are your goals as a journalist? Where would you like to work, what would you like to cover and why?
Applications and essays are due to the Washington High School guidance office by April 22, 2016.
